A gift bag and a story

Okay, so this isn’t going to be a very exciting post, but just in case you were checking in on me while I’m away (still in Eugene with Mary) I thought I’d have something for you to look at. My youngest son (4th grader) had birthday party to attend to this Friday. He told me a few days before that there is a club at school and apparently you have to have so many AR points (you read books and take ‘AR’ tests and get points) to be in this club, and then you can pick a prize. Well, his buddy (the birthday boy) told Andrew that he really wanted the horse journal that was one of the prizes because he loves horses. Andrew had 20-some points and needed 50 to get into the “club.” There was no way that his buddy could earn enough points, but Andrew had figured out a way and he was bound and determined to earn enough points to get into the club and be able to get the journal for him. Apparently the Harry Potter, Order of the Phoenix book is worth 40 points, and Andrew, having listened to the audio books so many times with me (and we just finished listening to it the other day for probably the 10th time at least), figured that if he “read” a few chapters of the book to “refresh his memory,” he would be able to get enough points, even if he missed a few questions, to get that journal! I wasn’t too sure how honest this was, but I figured that he was doing it for a good cause, and he did spend several hours “refreshing his memory” on the book, which, by the way, is probably thicker than his waist, so I didn’t say that he couldn’t do it. He came running up to me after school so proud with his horse journal to give as a birthday gift! There were 20 questions and he got them all right! He was so excited! So we put some $$ in the journal and called it good. He then asked me if I had a special bag to put it in…and of course…I didn’t! So I whipped this up and he was quite proud to take it to the party! I used Basic Grey Archaic paper and rub-ons. This line is so cute and perfect for any boy.. even one that likes horses! I used the rub-ons directly on the bag and made an acetate window to cover it. The dinosaur is MFT, and it is paper pieced.

Thanks for taking the time to check in on me!

Ok, you and I are going to wear a hole in this paper, K? I love it! The dinosaur is a cutie. While ur out "treehugging" in OR, I'm here in AK burnin' through paper like the house is on fire. Kuddos to your boy and his phenomenal AR scores. My daughter is always talking about what they can earn with AR points and generosity.....when I was growing up, you earned the ability to read and get a yob, but then there was no reading testing so that is how you didn't find out a person couldn't read until senior year.
